County Down - Royal County Down Golf Club
Test your mettle on this historic golf course
Here's one for the true golf appreciators! The Royal County Down Golf Club opened in March 1889 and is one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland. It has two 18-hole links courses: Championship Course and the Annesley Links.
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the Championship Links course stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to give a different vista from virtually every hole. The ninth hole is one of the most photographed holes in world golf. A 486 yard par 4, it's played from one side of a huge mound down to a fairway some 60 ft below and 260 yards from the tee. From the bottom of the slope the second shot is played over two bunkers to a raised green.
The Annesley Links course shares the same stunning setting as the Championship Links but is a little shorter. It still has plenty to test your mettle, however, if you can prevent yourself from being distracted by the magnificent views of mountains, dunes and sea.
After your game, why not enjoy a drink in the Merlough lounge as you cast a critical eye over the players finishing up their round just behind you.
