Glamorgan - Whitmore Bay Beach

A fabulously well equipped beach with plenty to do for all ages

Since the 1870s, visitors to Barry Island have come to enjoy the areas golden beaches, cafes, and family-friendly activities.

The Blue flag Whitmore Bay Beach is a sweeping crescent of perfect golden sand flanked by a wide promenade. 24 vibrantly coloured beach huts available for hire, climbing wall, beach wheelchairs and year-round events.

The famous Pleasure Park is just behind the beach, and there is plenty of entertainment, including amusement arcades, crazy golf, and horse and carriage rides. There are also beach huts for hire and wheelchairs for loan, a climbing wall, and various events to keep the whole family entertained.

If you get hungry, there are plenty of options, and the environment is known for being clean, safe and generally litter free. The beach has a seasonal lifeguard service, and dogs are not allowed from around the start of May to the end of September.

Fans of Gavin and Stacey will also enjoy spotting some of the filming locations from the TV series. Or, of course, you can just enjoy the glorious views to the Bristol Channel and a walk along the sand or promenade, or enjoy rock pooling and building sandcastles. It can be pretty windy on occasion, though, so come prepared!

There are beautiful coastal walks in both directions too - the Wales Coast Path follows the route through the Island and passes by the National Coastwatch Centre with views across the Bristol Channel to the Somerset Coastline.
